SDFVOA Protocol

Pre-match timed warm-up period Rev. 2023-2024 season

This protocol is for the first match of the afternoon. If there is another match scheduled after, please allow for enough time between the matches for the home team to setup the nets for the next match, if F/JV first, then they will need to set up the main court, if Varsity first, they set up the two side courts (if they already have equipment setup during the first match in preparation for the second, as long as it is padded, it can be in place during the first match). The clock should be set for 25 minutes between matches and not started until after the coach’s/captain’s meeting. Do not call the coach’s/captain’s meeting until everything is completely set up and checked for height/safety compliance.

30:00 – Arrive dressed in full uniform. If you do not come dressed in your uniform, please arrive earlier to ensure that you have time to change. Please carry uniform in a garment bag or other suitable luggage and dress in the appropriate facilities (bathroom, locker room, etc).

30:00-25:00 – DETERMINE WHO WILL SERVE AS SITE ADMIN CONTACT. If there is no site administration present, the head coach of the home team will serve as site admin. Officials arrive and immediately begin to check net height, align antennae (outside edge of sideline). Ensure there is the proper padding on the poles & ref stand to 5 1/2’ (66”). Poles, buckles and exposed metal on cables must be covered; there must be a clearly marked centerline. Check game ball and ensure it has proper internal air pressure (4.3-4.6 PSI). If there is more than 1 game ball then they must be of the same brand/model and color. Request 2 towels from site admin/head coach. Check clock set-up, identify obstructions and playable/non-playable areas, verify legality of uniforms (color, numbers, like-colored shirts/shorts, eliminate jewelry). Point of emphasis: make a conscious effort to review the contrast of the libero jersey compared to his/her teammates. The libero must be easily distinguished from his/her teammates. Verify the location of the home team bench. Conduct officials’ pre-match conference.

25:00 – Stop the clock. Call Captain’s and Coach’s meeting (*the coach who attends the meeting is the head coach for the entire match). Once this meeting ends start the clock and begin the 10-minute shared court warm-up period. At this time the scorekeeper and libero tracker should be at the table for instructions from the R2 and the R1 should conduct the pre-match conference with the line judges.

15:00 – Warning (whistle) at 15:15.  Use the HORN (1-count solid horn) to signal the serving team to begin their 6-minute court time. Start clock once receiving team exits the court and serving team begins warm up.

10:00 – Rosters from both teams due to the R1/R2. If the roster is turned in after this time the penalty is a point/loss of serve prior to the start of the set. However, use preventative officiating techniques to prevent this (i.e. ask for roster before 10 minute mark, remind coach about roster at pre-match meeting, etc.) R1 and/or R2 should begin checking players on the court against rosters. Do NOT cross off absent players’ names, have the coach make any changes to the roster, if necessary. Also, give 1-minute-remaining courtesy whistle to the serving team.

9:00 – Warning (whistle) at 15:15.  Use HORN to signal for the receiving team to take the court for their 6-minute court time. Do not restart the clock until the other team has completely left the court.

3:00 – Keep the clock running. Use HORN to signal for the receiving team to end their court time and move to the bench area.

2:00 – Starting lineups are due from each team. (If the lineup is turned in after this time then the penalty is a point/loss of serve prior to the start of the set – use preventative officiating, as with 10-min roster deadline). R2 to verify that court captain and libero numbers (if applicable) are listed on the lineups.

0:00 – Teams line up on endlines and R1 whistles for teams to approach the net counterclockwise and shake hands. R1 is ready on ref stand. R2 checks lineups from off the court on the sideline with the lineup sheets or scoresheet (no ball). Once lineups are verified, R2 returns sheet(s) to table and rolls game-ball to the serving team.
